Course description

The course is an introduction to different listening strategies and discussion methods addressing the external aspects of music – its audible qualities, instrumentation, etc. – and its internal aspects – a discussion of what music is. Every week we will listen to a new piece of music, representing different genres, and discuss how we experience and perceive the music.

Learning objectives

After completing the course the student is expected to

  • be able to discuss the internal and external aspects of music using the appropriate terminology
  • be able to describe different approaches to listening
  • be able to explain how the different listening methods affect his or her own practice

Overview

The course will provide students with a variety of approaches to how we can listen to, discuss and assess music, and how to experience and discuss music together.

The students are presented with a different work every week, and through conversations, discussions and assessments we evaluate what we call the external and internal aspects of music. The students and instructors also discuss what can be defined as relevant listening methods and clear descriptions of what is going on in the music. We examine the impact of the parts on the whole, and the whole on the parts.

Structure

One group formed of members from across instrument families and music genres.

Course requirements

  • Attendance is compulsory. More than 20 % absence from class will normally cause the student to fail the subject.
  • The student presents an assessment of one work either individually or with a group.
  • The student submits a reflective note (500 words). The content for the assignment is provided during the spring semester.

Final assessments

All coursework must be approved before the student can be given a final assessment.

The student is assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. The final assessment will be a pass/fail grade and is determined by the subject teacher on the basis of an individual assessment of the student’s academic level through the work accomplished in the course.

Reassessment: Any reassessment is subject to the same procedure as an ordinary assessment.
