Course description

The course is for students enrolled in the Master of Music in Music Performance (except for students taking the specialisation in Opera Répétiteur and The Composing Musician – NoCoM).

The purpose of the course is to arrange a forum where the students have the opportunity to share ideas and thoughts related to their own and others' Master's projects as well as discuss and reflect upon artistic issues.

Learning objectives

On completion of the course, it is expected that the students will

  • reflect on their own and others' artistic practise, projects and Master's project
  • be able to communicate about musical issues in their subject area with specialists
  • be able to analyse and critically assess various information sources and use these to structure and formulate scholarly arguments
  • be able to assess material from artistic development activities and research
  • show insight into and critically assess ethical norms and issues of a musical and professional nature

The students will be assessed on the same learning objectives in Master's Forum I and Master's Forum II. On completion of Master's Forum I, the student will be assessed based upon progress relating to the learning objectives. On completion of Master's Forum II, the student will be assessed according to the learning objectives of the course.

Overview

An introductory seminar will be arranged where the structure and content of the course will be presented, as well as an introduction to what the study programme entails and expect of the students. The course will consist of presentations on relevant topics (artistic research, reflection upon artistic issues etc.).

The students will be working on how to articulate issues relevant to the Master's project and artistic issues -– both their own projects and the project of fellow students. The Master's Forum will also be a relevant arena for artistic presentations of the ongoing Master's project.

Master's Forum is divided into groups that are led by a member of the academic staff who is responsible for the content and structure. In addition, the main instrument teachers will participate in some of the forums – for instance, relevant when the students they are supervising are presenting their project or when the Master's Forum is assembled in larger groups.

Structure

  1. The Introductory seminar will normally be organised at the start of the semester in conjunction with the opening week. Instruction may take the form of presentations, lectures and group assignments.
  2. The students will mainly meet in smaller groups (normally around ten meetings each year of study), but larger assemblies are also a format that is likely to be used.

Students have registered automatically for instruction/supervision and assessment in the course in accordance with the study progress requirements set out in the individual education plan.

Course requirements

  1. Active participation is mandatory during the introductory seminar.
  2. Active participation is mandatory. More than 20 % absence from class will normally result in a failing mark.
  3. The students are required to give a presentation of their own Master's project during the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be fulfilled and approved before the student is given a final assessment.

The final assessment will be given as a pass/fail mark, which will be determined by the leader of the respective Master's Forum based on each student's level of achievement throughout the course period.

New assessment

In the case of re-assessment, the same procedures apply.
