Course description

PROF11 Stage Awareness and Artistic Expression is based on PROF10 Musicians’ Health, Motivation and Practice. The course will continue to address issues raised in Year 1. The students will also work on developing their stage presence and communication skills.

Key topics are performance, stage presence, and communication skills.

The course is closely linked to the students’ principal instrument practice and is classed as a performance course.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • have practised techniques for performance preparation
  • be able to reflect on their identity as a musician
  • have gained experience of and be able to apply techniques for dealing with emotional challenges
  • have acquired experience of and be able to apply techniques to improve their stage presence
  • be able to communicate with their audience

  • Stage practice
  • Mindfulness
  • Feeling confident on stage
  • Personal radiance – what is it and can it be practised?
  • The art of failure
  • Your personal style as a performer
  • Self-care
  • Stress prevention techniques
  • Performance preparation

Structure

The tuition is experience-based and centres around the students’ personal circumstances, intentions and experiences. Active participation is expected.

Course requirements

Attendance is mandatory for this course. This means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis in the form of an evaluation of the student’s engagement with the topic.

New assessment

The course must normally be retaken in full to obtain a new assessment.
