Basso Con­tinuo

Course description

The course is for students whose principal instrument is harpsichord. Much of the harpsichord chamber music repertoire involves basso continuo accompaniment.

Learning objectives

On completion of this course, the student is expected to

  • possess knowledge of the different basso continuo forms and styles
  • possess practical basso continuo skills

Overview

Topics covered

  • different types of shorthand notation and playing styles
  • theory relating to all forms of basso continuo
  • study of vocal and instrumental music with basso continuo parts
  • developing the student’s practical basso continuo skills

Repertoire will be selected to introduce the student to different styles in terms of both historical development and various national traditions.

Structure

The tuition is normally given in groups. Some of the course will involve practising basso continuo with vocal and instrumental ensembles in different constellations.

The students are automatically registered for tuition/supervision and assessment in the subject in line with the progression set out in the individual education plan.

Course requirements

At the end of the academic year the student should submit a repertoire list of at least 40 minutes’ duration to include works in different styles from the 17th and 18th centuries. Some of the repertoire may also be included in the student’s principal instrument or chamber music repertoire.

Deadline: The repertoire list must be approved by the course tutor by 15 May in the fourth semester of the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met in order for the student to be enrolled for the final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by at least two internal examiners following a practical exam.

Practical exam

The student performs an own-choice programme lasting approx. 30 minutes.

In the case of re-assessment, the same procedures apply.
