Course description

The course is aimed at bachelor students, and during the course, students will further develop their professional identity and gain knowledge of opportunities, requirements, and expectations in the job market.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this course, the student

  • has an awareness of their own musician identity, competencies, and opportunities related to their future career.
  • can develop materials to promote and present their professional profile.
  • has knowledge of opportunities, expectations, and requirements in the job market, both in established institutions and in the freelance field.
  • is familiar with ethical norms and issues in the profession

Overview

The following topics may be included in the course:

Workplace knowledge

  • Presentations from various actors in the job market.
  • Presentation of relevant projects in the music field.
  • Writing a bio and CV.
  • Writing training/Application writing.
  • Funding
  • Knowledge of the music field, Norwegian cultural policy, and economy.
  • Professional ethics.

Portfolio and career planning

  • Awareness of one’s own identity, competencies, and interests.
  • Future roles in the job market.
  • Introduction to presenting one’s competencies in a portfolio.
  • Development of promotional materials (press photos, promo videos, websites, etc.).

Structure

The course is normally conducted over three days in a project week. Possible teaching methods include workshops, presentations, lectures, group work, and individual work.
Students are automatically registered for teaching/guidance and assessment in the course, according to the progression set in the education plan.

Coursework Requirements

Participation is mandatory during the project week. Absence of more than 20% will normally result in the student failing the course.

Final Assessment

All coursework requirements must be approved for the student to receive a final assessment.

Students are assessed based on the course's learning outcomes. Final assessment is performed by the course instructor and is expressed as pass/fail based on an examination portfolio.

Examination Portfolio

  • Career plan of at least 800 words (analysis and reflection on one’s own competencies, interests, and visions in light of knowledge about the job market).
  • Promotional materials (must include a musical CV, bio, and two press photos. May also include, for instance, a website, press materials, audio recordings, and video).

Deadline: The examination portfolio must be submitted no later than week 51 on NMH’s digital learning platform, by a deadline set by the course instructor.

Re-assessment

The same arrangement applies for re-assessment as for the regular assessment.
