Instrument Variant

  • Year of study: Two semesters, fall and spring
  • Final assessment: Assessment from the course instructor
  • Language of instruction: Norwegian/English

Course description

The course provides instruction in a historical variant of the student's main instrument, an instrument closely related to the main instrument, or a genre variant.

Only one variant can be chosen, and only once during the course of study. This means once during the bachelor's program and once during the master's program.

For students on the Bachelor in performance - classical programme, as well as students on the Master of Music Performance - Solo Instrument, specific rules apply to the following instruments:

• Bassoon
• Flute
• Clarinet
• Oboe

These four instrument groups can choose instrument variants required by orchestras and will be granted this in the 3rd and 4th year of the bachelor's program and the 1st and 2nd years of the master's program. The desired instrument variant should be specified in the elective course application form.

Structure

Course requirements

  • Attendance is mandatory. Normally, students that are absent more than 20 % will fail the course.
  • At the end of the academic year, the student must present a repertoire list of at least 30 minutes duration.

The list must be approved by the course teacher by 15 May.

Final assessment

Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course. The final assessment is given as a pass/fail mark, which is determined by the course instructor based on each student’s level of achievement throughout the course period.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment. Students may only re-follow the course if there are available places.
