Course description

The Church Music Choir is the church music students' practice choir in choir conducting. The choir should be able to function as an examination choir in choir conducting and liturgical music.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the student:

  • has knowledge of choir repertoire used in various church musical contexts
  • has experience in using the voice in work with tone quality, intonation, rhythm, text, phrasing, dynamics, homogeneity, and articulation
  • has knowledge of social coordination within a choir

Overview

Throughout the course, a varied repertoire is explored, including music from different stylistic periods and genres, as well as a wide range of choir repertoire for all categories of choirs.


Examples of repertoire include:

  • Choral music and motets from the Reformation period to modern times
  • Various types of biblical hymns
  • Excerpts from cantatas
  • Fully composed masses and liturgical prayers
  • A stylistically and thematically diverse range of older and newer choral music for various ensembles and occasions


Structure

The course consists of a combination of weekly classes and projects/workshops. The Church Music Choir is conducted by students enrolled in the NMH church music program.

Students are automatically enrolled in teaching/guidance and assessment in the course, according to the progression set in the curriculum


Course requirements

Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.

It is expected that the student comes prepared for choir rehearsals.
The semester plan will be available at the beginning of the semester.

Final assessment

All coursework requirements (arbeidskrav) must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment.

Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment.
