Course description
The course is for students enrolled in the Master of Music in Practice-Oriented Music Analysis Programme.
The aim is to provide a forum in which students can exchange ideas related to their own and others’ Master's projects, and engage in critical discussion and reflection on relevant scholarly issues.
Learning objectives
On completion of the course, it is expected that the students will be able to
- critically reflect on their own and others’ Master's project
- communicate musical issues in their subject area with specialist audiences
- analyse and critically evaluate diverse sources of information, and use them to develop and structure scholarly arguments
- evaluate material arising from music-theoretical inquiry, analysis, and historical research
- demonstrate insight into, and critically assess, ethical standards and issues of both musical and professional relevance
Assessment in Master’s Forum I and Master’s Forum II is based on the same learning objectives. Upon completing Master’s Forum I, students will be assessed according to their progress towards these objectives. Upon completing Master’s Forum II, assessment will reflect their level of achievement in relation to the stated learning outcomes.
Overview
An introductory seminar will present the course structure and content, alongside an orientation to the study programme and its expectations.
Throughout the course, students will develop the ability to articulate and discuss issues pertinent to their Master's projects – both their own and those of fellow students. The Forum also serves as a platform for presentations related to ongoing project work.
Structure
Students will primarily meet in plenary sessions, although smaller group or individual meetings may also be arranged as appropriate.
Course requirements
Active participation is mandatory. More than 20% absence from class will normally result in a failing mark.
All course requirements must be met in order for the student to be enrolled for the final assessment.
Final assessment
Presentation
The students are required to give a presentation of their own Master's project during the course.
The student will be assessed on the basis of the learning objectives for the course. The assessment is expressed in the form of a pass/fail and is determined on the basis of the presentation. The assessment is made by two internal sensors.
Reassessment
The same rules apply to reassessments as to ordinary assessments.
