Baroque ensemble

Course description

This course gives students experience in ensemble playing and a deepening of Baroque performance practice. The Baroque ensemble will meet once a week for rehearsals throughout the semester, and the course concludes with a concert.

One can participate in one semester (BARENS20) or two semesters (BARENS21). The course gives 2 ECTS credits per semester.

The course is open to all singers and instrumentalists who wish to gain experience of Baroque music.

Note: Participation in the course depends on the instrument needs of the various projects.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to

  • demonstrate knowledge of music and aesthetics of the Baroque period
  • show skills in performing Baroque styles and interpretation
  • gain experience in conveying music from the period

Overview

Preparation and study of works from the 17th and 18th centuries in an ensemble setting, which are then performed in a concert.

Structure

The ensemble meets for weekly rehearsals throughout the semester. Each project culminates in a concert. Students are expected to practice independently between rehearsals.


Approximate teaching resource is 90 minutes a week for eleven weeks.

Course requirements

  1. Attendance is mandatory. Normally, more than 20 % absence from class will normally result in failing the course.


Final assessment

All course requirements must be completed and approved for the student to receive a final assessment.

Students are assessed based on the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment is determined by two internal examiners based on a concert of approximately 30 minutes, normally held at NMH’s facilities. The final assessment is expressed as pass/fail.
