Course description

The course provides an introduction to fundamental knowledge and skills in Indian music traditions.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to:

  • demonstrate basic knowledge of Indian music traditions
  • demonstrate understanding of theoretical principles in Indian music
  • be able to perform Indian music
  • have experience in adapting Indian music to their own instrument
  • participate in ensemble playing based on Indian music

Overview

The course includes lectures on Indian music traditions and their theoretical principles. Students will work on a selection of repertoire, studied on their main instrument, vocally, and on relevant percussion instruments. Students are also expected to adapt music suitable for performance within the ensemble formed by the student group.

Structure

The course is taught in groups through five sessions of four teaching hours each. Instruction is organised as lectures, teacher-led rehearsal processes, collaborative work on information gathering, and concert attendance. A significant amount of individual practice and ensemble rehearsal is expected.

Course requirements

Active participation in the course is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally result in failure of the course.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be approved for the student to receive a final assessment.

The student is assessed in relation to the course’s learning objectives. Final assessment is expressed as pass/fail. The assessment is based on participation in a concert, normally held on NMH’s premises.

Reassessment

For reassessment, the same arrangements apply as for the ordinary assessment.
