Course description
This course provides an introduction to instructional strategies for teaching music theory and aural skills at the intermediate level. Emphasis is placed on integrating theoretical and aural concepts into practical music-making contexts such as performance, improvisation, and composition.
Learning objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student is expected to
- demonstrate basic instructional approaches to teaching music theory and aural skills to intermediate-level students
- design and implement level-appropriate learning activities that promote theoretical and aural musical understanding
- reflect critically on teaching practices and adapt strategies to various learning contexts
- apply personal aural skills proficiency to support teaching objectives
Overview
The course addresses:
- Instructional methods for introducing aspects of pitch, rhythm, harmony, and form
- Integration of theory and aural skills into practical music activities
- Observation and discussion of teaching practices and materials
- Practical teaching experience through peer instruction and feedback
Structure
The course is organized into seminars and workshops focusing on instructional strategies. Students will develop and present mini-lessons and engage in peer teaching exercises. Individual guidance sessions will provide personalized feedback and support.
Course requirements
Attendance and participation
Attendance is mandatory for this course. This means that more than 20% non-attendance will normally cause the student to fail the course. Students must actively participate in the seminars and workshops.
All course requirements must be met in order for the student to be given a final assessment.
Final assessment
Teaching portfolio
Students must develop and submit a teaching portfolio, including
- a teaching plan or unit design for intermediate-level learners
- documentation and evaluation of peer teaching experiences
The submission deadline (normally 14 days after the module/lecture has been completed) is to be agreed with the course coordinator. The assessment is expressed in the form of a pass/fail.
Reassessment
The same rules apply to reassessments as to ordinary assessments.
