Course description
Tuition on a historical variant of the student's principal instrument, an instrument closely related to the principal instrument, or a genre variant of the principal instrument. Examples of related instruments are violin/baroque violin, trombone/euphonium or classical guitar/jazz guitar. Students in composition programmes can choose their main instrument as Related instrument.
Only one related instrument can be chosen per year, and the same related instrument can be chosen for a maximum of two years.
The applicants must state which related instrument they wish to learn in answer to the e-mail which will be sent after the application deadline.
Note: the response deadline to the e-mail will be very short, so the applicants must check their NMH e-mail regularly.
Students choosing the interpretation courses "Interpretation practice in early music" will be prioritized for a relevant Related instrument.

Learning objectives
Upon completion of the course, students are expected to
- have an understanding for the instrument's characteristics
- master the instrument's playing/singing techniques
- have knowledge of relevant repertoire and performance practice
Overview
The course provides an opportunity to supplement their principal instrument instruction with a related instrument, a historical instruments, or an genre variant on their principal instrument.
Structure
Tuition is mainly individual, 22,5 minutes a week for 24 weeks. Certain related instruments require that the students can provide an instrument themselves.
Course requirements
At the end of the academic year, the student must present a repertoire list of at least 30 minutes duration. The list must be approved by the course teacher.
Final assessment
All coursework requirements must be approved for the student to obtain a final assessment.
Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning objectives of the course. The final assessment is expressed with the grades pass/fail, and set in one of two alternative ways:
- Alternative 1: At the beginning of the academic year the student can commit him-/herself to follow at least 80% of the tuition in the course. In such cases, the requirement of an examination (alt. 2) will no longer apply, and the final assessment is set by the course teacher on the basis of an individual assessment of the student's skills throughout the course period.
- Alternative 2: Final assessment is set on the basis of a practical exam with at least two internal examiners, where the student performs a self-chosen program of approx. 20 minutes.

Students failing the course must complete a practical exam as described in Alternative 2 above.
