Course description

The course is an introduction to different listening strategies and discussion methods addressing the external aspects of music – its audible qualities, instrumentation, etc. – and its internal aspects – a discussion of what music is. Every week we will listen to a new piece of music, representing different genres, and discuss how we experience and perceive the music.

Learning objectives

After completing the course the student is expected to

• be able to discuss the internal and external aspects of music using the appropriate terminology
  
• be able to describe different approaches to listening
  
• be able to explain how the different listening methods affect his or her own practice

Overview

The course will provide students with a variety of approaches to how we can listen to, discuss and assess music, and how to experience and discuss music together.

The students are presented with a different work every week, and through conversations, discussions and assessments we evaluate what we call the external and internal aspects of music. The students and instructors also discuss what can be defined as relevant listening methods and clear descriptions of what is going on in the music. We examine the impact of the parts on the whole, and the whole on the parts.

Structure

One group formed of members from across instrument families and music genres.

Course requirements

• Attendance is compulsory. More than 20 % absence from class will normally cause the student to fail the subject.
• The student presents an assessment of one work either individually or with a group.
  
• The student submits a reflective note (500 words). The content for the assignment is provided during the spring semester.

Final assessments

All coursework must be approved before the student can be given a final assessment.

The student is assessed in relation to the learning objectives of the course. The final assessment will be a pass/fail grade and is determined by the subject teacher on the basis of an individual assessment of the student’s academic level through the work accomplished in the course.

Reassessment: Any reassessment is subject to the same procedure as an ordinary assessment.

• kan omtale musikkens utside og innside med passende begrepsbruk
• kan beskrive forskjellige innfallsvinkler til lyttingen
• kan redegjøre for hva lyttemåtene har å si for egen praksis

Emnet skal gi studenten forskjellige innfallsvinkler til hvordan vi kan lytte til, omtale og bedømme musikk, og å oppleve og diskutere musikk sammen med andre.

Studenten presenteres for ett nytt verk hver uke, og gjennom samtaler, diskusjoner og vurderinger bedømmer vi det vi kaller utsiden og innsiden av musikken. Studentene og veiledere diskuterer også hva som både er en gyldig lyttemåte og gode utsagn om det som skjer i musikken. Vi ser på delenes innvirkning på helheten, og helhetens påvirkning på delene.

I gruppe sammensatt på tvers av instrumentgrupper og sjangere.

• Det er obligatorisk deltakelse i undervisningen. Dette innebærer normalt at fravær på mer enn 20 prosent fører til at studenten ikke består emnet.
• Studenten skal presentere sine vurderinger av ett verk enten alene eller i gruppe.
• Studenten skal levere et refleksjonsnotat. Oppgavetekst gis i vårsemesteret. Omfang: 500 ord.

Alle arbeidskrav i emnet må være godkjent for at studenten skal få avsluttende vurdering.

Studenten vurderes i forhold til emnets læringsmål. Avsluttende vurdering uttrykkes med bestått/ ikke bestått og fastsettes av faglærer på grunnlag av en individuell vurdering av studentens faglige nivå gjennom arbeidet med emnet.

Ny vurdering: For ny vurdering gjelder samme ordning som for ordinær vurdering.
