Course description

Norwegian folk music based on aural learning. The course is reserved for string players. Through learing repertoire, students gain an introduction to bowing patterns, rhythm, and tonality in Norwegian folk music. Repertoire from other genres with folk music characteristics and work with interpretation, can also be included.

It is advantageous for the student to have access to a violin.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, students are expected to:

  • be able to perform at least one traditional folk tune solo and repertoire in ensemble
  • has reflections on folk music characteristics
  • demonstrates the ability to learn by ear
  • masters a folk music repertoire
  • documents a repertoire list
  • can engage with folk music characteristics


Overview

The students will practice how to learn by ear, learning repertoire, and receives a basic introduction to folk music characteristics


Structure

The course is conducted as weekly classes. It may be relevant to organize some of the sessions in larger blocks and attend concerts or dance events together with folk music students. The students will be informed about in-house folk music activities they can participate in if wanted.

Course requirements

  1. Participation in the scheduled lessons is compulsory. Absence of more than 20% will normally lead to failure of the course.
  2. The student must submit a repertoire list of at least 6 tunes (slåter) to the main supervisor.

Final assessment

All coursework requirements (arbeidskrav) must be approved prior to obtaining a final assessment. Students are assessed in correspondence to the learning outcomes of the course. The final assessment will be given as a mark of “passed”/”failed” for each individual student, which shall be determined on the basis of her or his level demonstrated through the course work.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment. Students may only re-follow the course if there are available places.
