Course description

The course provides an introduction to Sami music traditions.

Learning outcomes

Upon completion of the course, it is expected that the student

  • has basic knowledge of Sami music traditions
  • documents knowledge of music theoretical principles in Sami music
  • has experience in adapting Sami music for their own instrument
  • masters the performance of joik and other Sami music at a basic level
  • can participate in ensemble playing based on Sami music

Overview

In the course, lectures are held on Sami music traditions and theoretical principles of the music. A selection of music is taught on the student's main instrument and vocally. The students will also adapt music so that it can be played with the ensemble that the student group forms.

Structure

The course is taught in a group with five gatherings of 180 minutes each. The tuition is organized as lectures, teacher-led study processes, collaborative processes for information gathering and concert visits. In addition, a lot of individual practice and ensemble rehearsals is expected outside of tutition.

Course requirements

  1. Active participation in the course is mandatory. This normally means that absence of more than 20 percent results in the student not passing the course.
  2. Active participation in the final concert is mandatory.

Final assessment

All course requirements must be met before the student can be given a final assessment.

The assessment is based on the learning objectives for the course. The course is assessed on a pass or fail basis by the course tutor in the form of an individual evaluation of the student’s level of attainment.

New assessment

If the student fails the assessment, they must retake the course.
