– The state budget for 2025 is as expected. Now that we have been working with restructuring for two years, the Music Academy has good control, says principal Astrid Kvalbein.

For 2024, NMH received 334 million; it will be 339 million in 2025.

– Since we have already implemented effective tightening measures at NMH, we can continue to conduct studies, artistic development work and high-quality research within the allocation we have received, says principal Astrid Kvalbein.

Worried about the trend

At the same time, the principal worries that arts education may have more challenging times ahead now that so much focus is on defence, health, technology and regional policy.

– We are, among other things, disappointed that the Grieg Academy is not prioritised, and we support the University of Bergen in that the music field deserves a clarification for 2025.

All in all, it's a fair budget

The increase shows that we get back much of the growth in prices and wages. At the same time, we lose something because there is a little less study point production, cuts in two PhD positions, and the government is phasing out all Corona and Ukraine support for the education sector.

In addition, the government is cutting down with a cheese slicer on everyone who receives public grants for higher education, so-called "withdrawals for efforts". We know that other institutions must resort to more substantial means and dismiss people, and we are confident that we avoid this at NMH, concludes the principal.

The state budget in pure numbers for NMH

  • The Norwegian Academy of Music, in the proposed state budget for 2025, allocated a total of 339.5 million kroner. This is an increase of a total of 5 million from 2024
  • Wage and price growth are compensated with 3.8%, which means 13 million kroner up.
  • What pulls most down is the phasing out of new study places since the pandemic, two recruitment positions (PhDs), and result-based payout - that is, produced study points that went somewhat down.
  • NMH also gets a reduction of 1 million due to re-prioritisation in the sector. This is something all universities and colleges get, and is called "withdrawals for efforts".
  • Approximately 0.8 million is deducted for a reduction of tuition fees from students outside the EEA/Switzerland, own payment for repetition of passed exams, and reduction due to fewer Ukraine students.
  • The department proposes to reduce the allocation to NMH by 32,000, - as a follow-up of the government's work with agreements on the rental of more efficient office space in state enterprises.
