Course description

The course is open to all students who wish to further develop their aural skills and seek greater challenges than those offered in the first module. The approach will be practical, with a balance between use of instrument, voice and movement.

Learning objectives

Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to

  • have strengthened their ability to achieve melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic precision in singing and playing, both solo and in ensemble settings
  • master relevant strategies to solve various ear training challenges
  • be able to analyze advanced musical progressions in terms of learning strategies
  • have increased awareness of melody, rhythm, and harmony as musical tools

Overview

The course content covers ear training with and without notation, with a particular emphasis on music from the 20th and 21st centuries. The main focus will be on selected works from the repertoire. Specific themes will be adapted to the students' level, interests, and needs.

Current topics that will be elucidated through theory and practice:

  • Pulse and underlying rhythm, metric structure, and phrase structure
  • Changing time signatures and polyrhythms
  • Tonal center awareness, tonality, and scale use
  • Harmony and consonance
  • Notation in contemporary music, e.g., microtonality
  • Sight-reading techniques, also related to the student's own repertoire
  • Imitation and memorization
  • Coordination exercises – rhythmic and melodic
  • Transcription techniques

Structure

The course is taught in groups with a double sessions per week throughout one semester. Students will regularly receive homework assignments related to the material worked on in class.

Course requirements

  • Active participation is mandatory for this course.
  • Students are required to keep a logbook documenting their methods and approaches throughout the semester. The logbook must be submitted to the course instructor by the specified date. Additionally, eight practical homework assignments are part of the course requirements.

Final assessment

The course requirements must be approved for the student to receive a final assessment.

The student is assessed in relation to the course's learning objectives. Final assessment is made by two internal examiners, one of whom is normally the course's coordinator. Final assessment is expressed as pass/fail.

New assessment

Students failing the course will have to apply to re-follow the course for a new assessment. Students may only re-follow the course if there are available places.
